There are various means and mediums to create a website. Whether you need a business website, personal website or an eCommerce website to sell your services & products, finding the best platform can take a lot of time and knowledge. Also choosing a wrong platform can cost you a lot of money in both <g class="gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="5" data-gr-id="5">long</g> term and short term.

In this article, we will help to streamline the process so that you can find the best possible website builder for your next project.

How to design a website

Traditionally building a website required coding experience & background. Web developers were the only expensive option available for the small business owners. A lot has happened since then.

Moore’s law state that the computers’ processing power doubles every 2 years. With the advancement in website design & development technology, various free and affordable options are available for small business owners. Currently, businesses can own high-end and affordable web design in Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey and surrounding areas.

Lets classify the website builder based on the 2 important components – time and budget.

Scenario 1: You have very limited time and budget

You might not know but there are artificial intelligence (AI) building thousands of websites worldwide.

Artificial Design Intelligence: If you are a busy professional with limited resources you might want to consider the artificial design intelligence (ADI) that helps to create your website automatically. Some big tech companies like Wix & TheGrid are offering to automatically build a website based on your content. If you can’t afford a web developer this cost-effective method is the best option for you.

Not ready to work with AI yet? Let’s try website builder software.

Scenario 2: You have time but very limited budget

Discover some of the most popular website builders that are both user-friendly and affordable.

Closed Source & Proprietary Content Management System (CMS):

WIX Website Builder

If you are not a tech savvy person and looking for a simple drag and drop editor, Wix is the best option for you. There are hundreds of template to choose from. Once you choose the web design template, you’ll simply change the images and content to depict your business. If you want to go a step further, use their drag & drop features to add and remove layout & sections. No need to hire a web developer.

Wix allows you to create a website for FREE. You can try your website design before publishing it.

Squarespace Website Builder

With visually appealing website templates Squarespace is the closest competitor to Wix. If you are in a creative field, Squarespace template might be the answer to own an expensive-looking and sleek website.

However, unlike Wix, it doesn’t offer any free trials and options. It comes with the hosting plan and all you need to do is connect your 3rd party domain using their domain mapping process.

Note: It’s a closed source platform that uses proprietary CMS.

Weebly Website Builder

Weebly is considered by many as one of the easiest website builder available for free. If you have a limited budget and need a simple and elegant website design you should try Weebly. It has more features and <g class="gr_ gr_44 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="44" data-gr-id="44">large</g>r selection of apps than Wix. It offers an <g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="8" data-gr-id="8">ability</g> to <g class="gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="9" data-gr-id="9">backup</g> and export <g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="10" data-gr-id="10">entire</g> website to a new host.

Like any other closed source software, the only drawback is the limited functionality and customization options. However it is worth noting that Weebly offers access to its source code. If you have a coding knowledge you can easily change the HTML and CSS to rewrite site layout, structure and design.

Note: It’s a closed source platform that uses proprietary CMS.

Scenario 3: You have Time & Budget

Open Source Content Management System (CMS):

Video Transcript

Welcome to CustomizePress

In this tutorial, you will learn to install WordPress theme and create pages and posts for your website. So lets get started by installing the theme and customizing it for your business. If you are using a local host then your URL will be,

localhost:8888/your-wordpress-foldername/wp-login.php

( On our example, it will be: localhost:8888/firstsite/wp-login.php )

Enter your username and password to go to your WordPress dashboard.

Click on Appearance

From the menu option click on themes.

Currently there are only 3 default WordPress themes to choose from. If you want to use 3rd party premium theme, you will have to download it into your document root. In order to do so, unzip the folder that you receive from the theme developers.

For example, when you download Edpro Premium Theme, you will receive a zipped folder called, EdPro Installation Package. Locate and unzip that folder, to open its content. From the opened folder, find EdPro zip file and unzip its content as well.

Next, you will upload the unzipped Edpro folder into the Theme folder of your root directory. To do so, locate your root directory htdocs by going to your application folder and clicking on MAMP.

In the previous tutorial, you downloaded and installed wordpress folder inside your htdocs. I renamed my WordPress folder as firstsite. Click the folder firstsite, then click on wp-content. Inside this folder, you will find a folder called themes. Click on that folder.

As you can see, there are 3 themes already in it. Those are the 3 default themes that you have noticed earlier by clicking on your dashboard => appearance => and themes. Now from the Edpro Installation Package folder, we will drag and drop the Edpro Unzipped Folder, inside the theme folder.

Go back to your WordPress dashboard, then click on appearance and themes. As you can see there is a new theme on a page called Edpro Premium Theme. Hover your mouse over it and click on Activate. Find your site name on the left corner top, right click and open it in a new tab. Lets preview your new theme and see how it looks.

As you can see, we need to add the menu and various other sections, to complete the site.

Lets create some quick sample pages & posts, and assign it to the navigation menu. To create pages and posts, you can use the sample text and images that is inside your Edpro Installation Package. Lets start by uploading sample images from Edpro Installation Package folder.

For that,

Go to your dashboard and

Click on Media

Click on Add New

Click on select files

Locate Edpro Installation Package

Click on Edpro Art & Design

Click on the folder Upload Images (There are 12 images in the sub folders)

Select and upload all of them.

Your final media library will look like this. We will use these images on our pages, posts, sliders, header, and other sections of our homepage.

We will create 12 pages using the sample text from Edpro Installation Package. To do so,

Go to your dashboard and

Click on Pages

Click on Add New

Give it a title: Full Width

Locate page attributes section on the right hand side.

Click the dropdown menu under the template. From the menu choose Full Width Page Template. By doing so, you are assigning Edpro Page Templates to your pages.

Now, we will add content to this page. If you do not have your content yet, go to Edpro Installation Package and use the sample content.

Locate your Edpro Installation Package and

Click on Edpro Sample Content

Open the document called Sample Text – pages

Copy sample content

Go back to your Full Width page and

Click on Text (HTML) tab located on top of your text editor

Paste the content

Now I will show you how to add image to the page.

Click on visual on the top of text editor

Hit enter to create space for the image.

To centre the image click on the centre align button on the text editor

Click on Add media

Click on media library and

Select the image with ocean and clouds

Click on insert into page.

Now you’re ready to publish your page. Click to publish your page. To visit your newly created page, click on preview changes.

Use the following table to create 11 more pages. The instruction is exactly same as creating the Full Width page. The only difference between these pages is their corresponding page templates. So pause this tutorial & complete the table.

Once you complete the table, go to dashboard and click on pages. Make sure you have 12 pages and 1 WordPress default sample page. You might have noticed that many pages that you have just created are incomplete.

In the next few minutes, you will learn to create a complete page with all the required widgets and plugins. But before we do that, lets go and create some sample posts.

We will start by creating, post categories. We will use these categories to differentiate our various posts that we will be creating shortly.

Go to your dashboard and click on posts

Click on categories

To create your first category, type the category name Blog

Type blog as a slug name (Make sure that your slug name is all small letters)

Click on Add new category

Your new category will appear on the right.

Create second category called news.

Type news on the name field

Type news as a slug with all small letters

Click on Add new category

Create third category called Featured Category

Type featured category on the name field

Type featuredcategory as a slug with all small letters. Notice that there is no space between the 2 words featured and category

Click on Add new category.

Create fourth category called Upcoming Events.

Type Upcoming Events on the name field

Type upcoming dash events as a slug with all small letters. Notice that there is a dash between the 2 words upcoming and events

Click on Add new category.

Create the fifth and last category called Upcoming Workshops.

Type Upcoming Workshops on the name field

Type upcoming dash workshops as a slug with all small letters. Notice that there is a

dash between the 2 words upcoming and workshops

Click on Add new category.

You have created all the required categories. Now

Go to your dashboard and

Click on posts

Click on Add New

Add title to your post and call it Blog Number 1

For the post content,

Locate your folder, Edpro Installlation Package and

Click on the sub folder, Edpro Sample Content

Open the document, Sample Text dash Posts 1

Copy the content and paste it into the text editor of Blog Number 1

On the right hand, under categories, click on blog and featured categories (These are the categories that you created earlier)

At the bottom, click on set featured image and

Choose the image called ep_blog1

Click on set featured image

Now go ahead and publish your site

Click on preview to see how it looks.

Great Job!!!

Now you will use the following table to create 3 more posts. Always make sure to select the right category. Pause the video here and complete the posts.

Let me show you, how the posts that you have just created was used in your homepage design.

Click on the visit site to go to your home page

Scroll down to the section called Recent Posts. All the posts under the category, blog, are listed here

Similarly, if you scroll further down to the section called Bulletin Board, you will see 3 empty sub-sections. Lets create some posts to fill this section. Use the following table to create 6 more posts.

Pause the video here and complete the posts.

Once you complete the table, your posts listing will look like this. Now go back to your homepage and refresh the page. On the bulletin board section, you will see the newly created post.

At this stage you have successfully connected your WordPress with your database. Run the install and complete the WordPress form. Remember, you can always change these settings later.

Save your username and password. In the next step, you will need these information to log into your website.

Click on appearance => themes

Now, if you go back to your site and refresh the page you will see a different theme on it.

In the next tutorial, I will show you, how you can download and install beautiful themes like this. While choosing the 3rd party WordPress themes, you must consider the followings,

Make sure that the theme is 100% fully responsive on all devices (mobile-friendly). Starting 2015 Google will not display non-responsive theme on the search engine result page (SERP).

Various features will enhance the presentation of your products, testimonials and demos, so look for those features and see how impressive they look on the theme

The most important factor is whether you can customize the theme without any coding experience and if you can, do you receive any help and support to do it yourself.

These questions will help to choose the best theme available out there and this will minimize any hidden costs that might incur in a long term.
